Jim Simon ('ShieldMaster')
As a writer, publisher and representative of comic book properties, Jim Simon knows a thing or two about superheroes. DS caught
up with the creator to discuss his latest project ShieldMaster,
Protector Of The Heroes.
ShieldMaster deals with a lot of
interesting concepts, from superheroes to other planes of reality. What
inspired the book?
"I wanted to do a story in sort of a retro comic book style, touching
on a variety of bases in kind of a mash-up way. While the first story
stands on its own, I envision this as part of a larger story, and the
several concepts, including various planes of reality as you put it,
will all get played out to some degree or another should we decide to
go on beyond the first story."

Captain
America, thought dead, comes back to life
Rising from the dead after being killed off over two years ago, Captain America is being resurrected by Marvel Comics.
Though the circumstances of his return are being closely shielded, the star-spangled superhero returns July 1 in a five-comic-book series, "Captain America Reborn."
A big-budget movie in development by Marvel is also expected in 2011.
After close to 60 years in print,
Marvel Comics killed off Steve Rogers, aka Captain America,
in 2007, one of its most famous and beloved superheroes, amid a
controversial story line.
He fought and triumphed over Hitler, Tojo, international Communism and a host of super-villains, but a sniper's bullet cut Captain America down in 2007, a move that shocked many of his fans.
Joe Simon and Jack Kirby
Over the course of their 18-year partnership in comic books, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby worked in and, in many cases, defined just about every genre and style imaginable. After creating Captain America, they stretched the once-staid comic page into a dynamic canvas, in which figures flew from one panel to the next; when the action still couldn't be contained, they concocted the centerfold spread. Then they invented the romance comic (Roy Lichtenstein sends his thanks), and steamrolled their way through science fiction, crime, horror, and more. It's all sampled in The Best of Simon and Kirby, a gloriously oversize tome.
The Best of Simon and Kirby
Joe Simon and Jack Kirby are comics Lennon/McCartney dream duo. Teaming in the 1940s, Simon was the seasoned writer/editor/inker and Kirby the hot young artist who ultimately became one of the industry's most influential and creative personalities. They invented Captain America, received the first cover bylines, and their jump-off-the-pages action told the story as strongly as the words, changing comics forever. This first in a six-volume series offers a broad look at their collaborations. They worked in many genres, and chapters spotlight heroes, science fiction, war and adventure, crime drama, Westerns, horror, sick humor, and romance (future volumes will cover some subjects individually), each with a background intro by Kirby biographer Mark Evanier. The book sports 25 gloriously restored comics selected by Simon plus five additional covers the art is absolutely killer”and is capped with a checklist of all the comics they produced together/apart. Dazzling from beginning to end, The Best of Simon and Kirby is a monumental piece of comics history and a hunk of Americana that is a dream come true for legions of fans. Buy it for your graphic novels, art, or pop-culture collections, but buy it. Essential. Mike Rogers, LJX/LJ
